Vienna Newspaper Wiener Zeitung Ends Daily Print Edition After 320 Years

One of the world's oldest newspapers, the Vienna-based Wiener Zeitung, has ceased its daily print edition after more than three centuries.

First published as the Wiennerisches Diarium in 1703, the paper aimed to provide a straightforward account of the news without embellishment. The final front page of the print edition carried the headline "320 years, 12 presidents, 10 emperors, 2 republics, 1 newspaper."

Due to a decline in revenue caused by a recent change in publishing requirements, the newspaper, owned by the Austrian government but editorially independent, had to downsize significantly, cutting 63 jobs and reducing its editorial staff to 20. It will continue operating online and plans to release a monthly print edition.
