Togo has experienced an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus on a poultry farm, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
The outbreak occurred near the capital city of Lome and resulted in the death of 1,450 birds out of a flock of 1,500, with the remaining birds being culled.
The WOAH report also highlighted a separate incident in June, in which 9,500 farm poultry died from the virus in South Africa's Mpumalanga province. However, the strain detected in Togo was H7, which is distinct from the H5N1 strain responsible for previous global outbreaks.
