South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for next month, will proceed as an in-person event, despite an arrest warrant issued for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at a conference by the ruling ANC, Ramaphosa stated that discussions on the format are being finalized and emphasized that the summit will be a physical meeting. It remains uncertain whether Putin will attend, given the International Criminal Court's warrant related to allegations of unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children.
South Africa, as an ICC member, would be obliged to arrest Putin if he visits the country. Rumours had circulated about a potential relocation of the talks to China to avoid such a predicament.
Despite the arrest warrant, South Africa maintains a stance of impartiality and prioritizes dialogue in relation to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
