On 13 February 2023, Equatorial Guinea announced its first-ever outbreak of the Marburg virus disease. Marburg is a virus related to Ebola, causing similar symptoms such as hemorrhagic fever, muscle pain, and diarrhea. The deadliest known outbreak of the Marburg virus occurred in Angola in 2004, infecting over 250 people. The virus has a high fatality rate, with up to nine out of ten infected people potentially dying from it. While there are currently no vaccines or treatments available, efforts are being made to control and prevent the spread of the virus.
