Anti-Hijab Protests in Iran

Following the murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, Iran experienced public turmoil and riots. According to reports, Amini was detained by Iran's morality police and reportedly tortured to death while in detention for disobeying the hijab law.

Iran dissolved its morality police after two months of widespread protests, including deaths and recordings of women chopping off their hijabs and burning them that acted as a statement of rage toward the morality police.

On December 3, Iranian authorities said that they will review the decades-old Hijab law that requires all women to cover their heads in public.
