Antarctica Sea Ice Hit New Record Low

Antarctica's sea ice has hit a new record low, with scientists saying they have "never witnessed such an extreme condition before." Further decreases are expected before the summer melting season ends. The unprecedented losses of sea ice in the past six years may be linked to ocean heat records and weather changes caused by climate change. A predicted increase in El Niño variability could slow Southern Ocean warming but its impact on the Antarctic shelf ocean is unknown. Half of all glaciers are expected to disappear by 2100, with serious implications for communities relying on glacial runoff for water, based on current climate pledges.
